Right Reverend Michael-John Austin - Abbot. The House of Initia Nova seeks to revolutionize how Anglicans understand Benedictine religious life. Based on the Rule of St. Benedict, the community is a faithful witness to traditional and contemporary expressions of religious life coexisting within the same household and community. The traditional monastic model of chaste singles, both male and female, is the cornerstone from which all else springs.
Building on the model of a local community, however, the House of Inita Nova opens its spiritual doors to married individuals, not as second class citizens to religious life, but as peers drawn by the Holy Spirit into an intentional living of their baptismal vows. Whether residing at Genesis Abbey or living in the larger community on mission, all vowed participants receive the same computer-based formation program. The House of Initia Nova also has a vibrant Oblate program, valid and authentic in its own tradition and history.
The Archbishop of Canterbury has affirmed Abbot Michael-John's desire not to align the House of Initia Nova with any province of the Anglican Communion during the difficulties that pull on the fabric of the global church.
Michael-John was consecrated in a rare ecumenical event. The abbot of Conception Abbey, Missouri, Rt. Rev. Gregory Polan OSB, presented Michael-John to the Episcopal Diocesan of Iowa for consecration. Since that time Michael-John has been invited to attend the annual gathering of Roman abbots in the Americas.
Update, 29 April 2020: House of Initia Nova has moved its motherhouse from Houston, Texas, to the Vermont address given above. The abbot's contact number is: 281.630.4842. The community is no longer associated with the National Association of Episcopal Christian Communities. + Michael-John
