The manuscript illustration depicts his vision of the whole world in a bright ray of light amid the darkness. What we know of Saint Benedict comes from the Second Book of the Dialogues written by Pope St. Gregory the Great. The office hymn, Gemma caelestis, and the sequence, Laeta quies, poetically recall incidents of Benedict's life.

Monastic Retreats
Jane Lampman writes in the Christian Science Monitor (28 June 2001) about how author John Claassens found community by making monastic retreats. "Religious community is fostered, Claassen says, by the shared routine of prayer and chanting; daily work responsibilities -- creating a cottage industry to ensure community survival; and most important, the sense of spiritual calling. And more and more, he adds, 'they have the sense of mission of being in hospitality, of providing a space for outsiders to come in.'" Mr. Claassens documents his spiritual odyssey in Alone In Community: Journeys Into Monastic Life Around the World (Forest of Peace, 2001).
Benedictines
