Online Video Course
A new online video course, “The Heart of the Rule of Benedict” with S. Joan Chittister OSB, will begin on January 2, 2012, through the Monasteries of the Heart website (www.monasteriesoftheheart.org).
In this yearlong course, participants will have access to weekly three to five minute videos on Benedictine spirituality distilled by Sister Joan from the 1,500-year-old Rule of Benedict. Chapter by chapter, Sister Joan will present the essence of the spirituality that has shaped and formed her life. The course spans 2012 and is divided into four sessions each lasting two months.
You can sign up session by session for $10 each session or sign up all four for $30 -- a savings of $10. Included in the course is an optional online discussion facilitated by Erie Benedictine Sister Mary Ellen Plumb OSB.
Christmas CD
Just in time for Christmas, the Saint Vincent Camerata Scholars are releasing a new CD, A Blessed Day Has Dawned - Sacred Choral Music: Palestrina, Laude, Gregorian Chant.
The release of the new CD is tied to the creation of the Saint Vincent College Camerata Scholarship Fund. This fund will provide merit scholarships to Saint Vincent College students of any course of study who qualify to sing as members of the Camerata Scholars. DVD Conferences
Sister Maria Tasto OSB, a Ferdinand Benedictine, has released A Transformed Life a three-DVD set and guidebook of six conferences based on her experience as a founding member of the Resource Faculty of Contemplative Outreach, inspired by the work of Abbot Emeritus Thomas Keating OCSO. American Benedictine Academy
The latest issue of The American Monastic Newsletter includes information about the American Benedictine Academy's biennial convention. The theme, "Seek Peace and Pursue It: Monasticism in the Midst of Global Upheaval," will be developed at St. Scholastica Monastery, Duluth, Minnesota, 2-5 August 2012. National Catholic Youth Choir
Applications are now being accepted for the National Catholic Youth Choir's 13th season, 12-27 June 2012. Fr. Anthony Ruff OSB is the choir's founding director, and the choir is led by world renowned choral conductor Dr. Axel Theimer. For more information, please visit <catholicyouthchoir.org>.
Earthquake Damages Benedictine Hall, Oklahoma
St. Gregory's University, Shawnee, Oklahoma, experienced damage to its academic center, Benedictine Hall, on Saturday night during the 5.6 earthquake, 5 November 2011. One of the four turrets of Benedictine Hall collapsed, and the other three are cracked and will be removed Tuesday if they do not fall down before then. The hall is the most prominent structure on the campus.
MID Reports on Interreligious Gathering at Assisi
On the homepage of Monastic Interreligious Dialogue there are now links to a video with excerpts from the speeches that were given in Assisi on the morning of October 27, 2011, and photos taken at the afternoon session. The current issue of Dilatato Corde contains a full report. Delegations from the world's religions joined the Holy Father in Assisi to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace convoked by Pope John Paul II in 1986,

P. Adalbert de Vogüé OSB, 86. His body was found 2 km from the monastery after a search
of eight days. He probably died Friday, 14 October 2011. The publication of
Community and Abbot in the Rule of Saint Benedict (1960) began a distinguished
career of
research and publication concerning
the Rule of Saint Benedict and early
monastic literature. He served frequently on the faculty of the
Pontifical Athanæum of Saint Anselm in Rome before
taking up the hermit's life in 1974 near his monastery. The monks will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial, Wednesday,
26 October, 11 a.m. Donne-lui, Seigneur, le repos éternel.
Red Plains Monastery to Close
According to Sister Jan Futrell OSB, Red Plains' prioress, the Benedictine Sisters are preparing to close their Piedmont, Oklahoma, home and move permanently to Atchison, Kansas, to become a part of daily life at another Benedictine monastery. The Red Plains sisters officially joined the Mount St. Scholastica Monastery in 2009 because of the aging of the Piedmont nuns and the fact that there are fewer people joining religious orders across the country. The Red Plains Spirituality Center, founded by the Sisters, will continue under the sponsorship of the Archdiocses of Oklahoma. Read more.
Camaldolese Elect New Prior General
The Camaldolese Benedictine Congregation, meeting in General Chapter at its motherhouse in Camaldoli, Italy, on Wednesday, 5 October 2011, elected Father Alessandro Barban OSB Cam. as its new Prior General. Father Alessandro is the current Prior of the Hermitage in Fonte Avellana. He assumes his responsibilities immediately. The congregation welcomed the election with great joy and looks forward to the leadership and inspiration of its new General.
Good Sams Gather for Election
The Sisters of the Good Samaritan of the Order of St Benedict, a monastic congregation founded in Australia by Archbishop John Bede Polding OSB in 1857, concluded their 25th Chapter Gathering on Saturday, 1 October 2011. At this gathering the delegates re-elected Sister Clare Condon SGS as Superior-General for the next six years. The delegates also elected Sisters Bernadette Corboy SGS, Veronica Hoey SGS, Catherine McCahill SGS, and Bernardina Sontrop SGS to the Council of the Superior. More information is available online.
