Scholastica Project:
providing provisional texts
appropriate to St. Scholastica

Texts from the Sacramentary

(trans. Ildefonso Cardinal Schuster OSB, 1880-1954)

Opening Prayer

Lord,
as we keep the memory of the holy virgin Scholastica,
we pray that through her example
we may serve you with an undivided heart
and experience the joy and power of your love.

Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.

Opening Prayer

God of love,
to show us the beauty of holiness,
you caused the soul of St. Scholastica
to go up into heaven in the form of a dove.

Grant that by her example,
we may live in such peace and purity of heart as
to enjoy everlasting happiness with her.

Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your
Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of
the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

Alternative Opening Prayer

Ever-faithful God,
St. Scholastica trusted your promise
that the prayer of the lowly will pierce the heavens.

Grant that by her intercession,
our lives will be gladdened
by your merciful love
and be renewed in your service.

We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.

Prayer over the Gifts

God our helper,

may these gifts and our service
find favor in your sight.
Through the intercession of St. Scholastica,
let this holy food help us live as your holy people.

We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.

Preface

Father, all powerful and ever living God,
we do well always and everywhere to give you
thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord.

So powerful in confident prayer,
more surpassing in fervent love,
St. Scholastica ran the way of your commandments
in the school of holy Benedict.
On earth, in a community of learners,
they sought you above all things.
Now, in our heavenly homeland,
they share the joys of everlasting life and glory.

And so we sing your praise
with the whole company of angels and saints,
as we joyfully proclaim: Holy, holy, holy....

Prayer after Communion

Lord,
look with love upon your household.
Give them the good zeal
which leads to everlasting life with you.
Let them prefer nothing to the love of Christ,
who leads them in the path of eternal life and glory,
both now and for ever.
